Artist Statement
My artwork is a process of transforming perception to reveal frailty, memory and allegory. Landscape, cityscape, urbanism and nature are strong sources of influence as I respond to my surroundings, digesting atmospheric impressions that are both immediate and residual. I allow process through material to shape the development of an artwork, organically weaving in and out of a diverse combination of genres that include sculpture, video and installation. Process driven work allows me to respond intuitively, opening up narrative possibilities between form, content and material. I create alternate worlds for a temporal experience, introducing questions like what is it to be under, walk upon, near, between, sit on and touch. I think of nature as a powerful and magnificent metaphor that is at once universal and personal. This functions as a touchstone to investigate phenomenological concepts. Using ephemeral elements such as ice, sand and light, the work becomes durational and engages viewers sensorially. The embodiment of an element, be it water, clay, metal, wood or light, possess tangible attributes that I use to embrace materials found, discarded and self made to build a sensorial visual experience.
