Jairo Alfonso

Born in 1974 in Cuba Alfonso now lives and works in New Jersey. Graduated from the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) and from the Escuela Nacional de Arte(ENA) in Havana, Cuba. He has worked with different media such as painting, installation, sculpture, but his latest work has been focused on drawings and video.

Alfonso has featured more than 10 personal exhibitions in different countries and around 60 group shows, his works have been part of important exhibitions such as FLOW. Economies of the Look and Creativity in Contemporary Art from the Caribbean. IDB Cultural Center. Washington DC, USA; Cuban America: An Empire State of Mind. Lehmann College Art Gallery. New York, USA. Ensaios de Geopoética, Porto Alegre, Brazil (2011); Una China en el Zapato. Sala de Exposiciones Santa Inés, Sevilla (2004); Instrumentaciones (Solo show) at Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Wifredo Lam, Havana (2000), among others. In 2014 was granted a residency at Guttenberg Arts, and in 2007 was awarded with Batiscafo Residence, Havana, Cuba; and the Muyehlekete- O pensador-The Thinker Workshop, Maputo, Mozambique.
